“Dear Tobey, I want to be the Porkins of Robotech”

New York, NY March 18, 2013

Tana Sarnt is an actor. Unless you are a family member, a friend or the ultimate Law and Order enthusiast, he is an unknown actor. Relative obscurity suited him well until a childhood fantasy developed into an adult obsession. In 2007, when plans for a Robotech live action movie (RLAM) were announced, he realized that the pinnacle of his acting career would be to land a role as a Veritech fighter pilot in the Robotech live action movie.

"I grew up watching Robotech in the 80's and have been a fan since. It would be a dream come true to be involved in the feature film production. I'm a little starry-eyed right now and know that getting a part is a long shot, but I'm banking on my love of the series and my experience as an actor to help me land a role in the film. I want to be the Porkins of Robotech."

For those outside the Star Wars fandom, Jek Porkins, also known as X-Wing pilot Red Six, was the portly, bearded pilot who was the first to die during the mission to destroy the Death Star. William Hootkins, the actor who played the character, was an accomplished actor in his own right, but was relatively unknown to the masses.

As a greater unknown, Tana Sarnt acknowledges the need to separate himself from others to be considered for a part in the production. So, he wrote, directed and acted in a Robotech live action fan film, "Midnight Sky," to show the producers and director Nic Mathieu how dedicated he is to Robotech and how determined he is to be involved. Tana shot the film in New York and uploaded it to YouTube where it has collected over 120K views. Lacking the budget for visual effects, Tana approached his sci-fi fan film with a focus on the story of Robotech. Aware of the strong fan association with the original series, Tana chose not to re-create Rick Hunter and Minmei but to allude to their love story with original characters.

"I never saw myself as any of those characters. I just want to fulfill my childhood dream of manning a 40-foot transforming mecha and dying honorably in battle while taking some Zentraidi down with me. The RLAM is the closest chance I’ll have of doing that. Zac Efron can play Rick Hunter; he'll be great."

With every new update or announcement for the RLAM, Tana feels both encouraged and anxious. He understands that there is a finite time during which he can contact and convince the right people.

"Tobey Maguire and Nic Mathieu, please watch my film and consider me for a role in the RLAM. I am a die-hard fan who will deliver as an actor, and you won't find a more committed person than me.”

It's hard to say how Tana will fare in his YouTube endeavor, but as Hollywood films constantly remind us, if you never take a shot, you were never in the game. Don't pull up Porkins, you can hold it!

SYNOPSIS: "Midnight Sky" is a story told by an anonymous Robotech Veritech fighter pilot recalling two memories: his near death encounter with Miriya, the Zentradi ace pilot, and his first date with a loved one on Earth. As with all memories, the story is fragmented; dream and reality are unclear.
